Born and raised in South Africa, Patrick Soon -Shiong is the world’s richest doctor and also the richest Asian America. He is the wealthiest man in Los Angeles, a surgeon, businessman, philanthropist, medical researcher and a professor at University of California.
He is ranked by Forbes as the wealthiest American in the healthcare industry. He was born on 29 July 1952 and grew up in Port Elizabeth after his family fled from China during World War Two.
He completed high school when he was 16 years and graduated from the University of Witwatersrand at 23 with a medical degree where he emerged fourth out of 189 graduates. He did his internship at the All-White Johannesburg General Hospital where he was paid half the salary of everyone else.
Soon-Shiong who holds 50 US patents invented the world’s first protein nanoparticle delivery technology that treats breast cancer. He founded two drug companies, Abraxis and American Pharmaceutical Partners. He was well known in the 1980s for transplanting pancreas cells to treat diabetes.
He made his fortune by revolutionizing cancer treatment. He founded Nantworks in 2001 which developed technology that analyses genetic data from tumors and aims to realize his vision of future cancer treatments.
Soon-Shiong’s fortune is ranked by Forbes among the largest 100 in the US and has been using his money to fund noble causes like Children’s health.
